Top 8 Feature Match – Nick Blandin vs. Matt Robinson

Nick Blandin (Ergon // Kyte, 3rd Seed) vs. Matt Robinson (Jemial // Kyte, 6th Seed)

The last two Players to Watch left in the tournament finally meet, clashing in Top 8. While this does mean one of them will be unforunately eliminated, the other will advance on to Top 4, maybe making our prediction come true with a victory. As the higher seed, Nick Blandin will take the play.
Nick charged a Zephyr Crystal to begin, and passed.
Matt’s opening hand consisted of 2 Azure Seer, Silver Watchwoman, Phantasmal Guards, and Stormcaster of the Azure Tower.
Azure Seer found a Mr. Kins, which Matt kept on top. Ergon found Devourment and Argent Egg at the end of Matt’s turn.
Nick charged a Corona, the Spirit Ruby, and played a Golem of Devourment.
Matt began his turn with an attack from Azure Seer, which was blocked by Golem of Devourment. He then played Azure Seer, keeping Sylphia on the top of his deck. Phantasmal Guards put 2 token into play, and ended Matt’s turn. Poisonous Strike and Greathawk of Cloudsea hit the discard zone from Ergon.
Nick played Hellish Guardhound, targeting one of the Azure Seers, and passed.
Matt played Mr. Kins, filling up his field with units. With 2 Zephyr crystal active, he passed the turn. Ergon found Gloom Oligarch, and Omega Magic: Yami.
Nick played Sylphia, calling Odd, and Matt used Mr. Kins to save himself before the Azure Seers were blown away. Nick then used Kyte to discard Monarch Sky Dagger, returning Sylphia to his hand and passed.
Matt followed up with a Sylphia of his own, calling odd. He then discarded Iakuma Juggernaut to return Sylphia to his hand. Mr. Kins took a peek at the top of his deck, and Matt passed. Nick used Ergon to put Gloom Oligarch on the top of his deck before his turn began.
Nick played the Gloom Oligarch, and passed.
Matt played Sylphia again, calling even. Nick used Gloom Oligarch’s activated ability, sacrificing Golem of Devourment to give an Illusion token -1000, then sacrificing Gloom Oligarch to himself to do the same to the other token. Matt used Mr. Kins to draw a card, then discarded Azure Guardian to return Sylphia to his hand before ending. Nick used Ergon to return Gloom Oligarch to the top.
Nick played the Gloom Oligarch and passed, with 2 shards active.
Matt charged to his 6th shard, and took a look at Nick’s discard zone while contemplating his play. Mr. Kins came down, taking a look at another Mr. Kins and an Iakuma Juggernaut on the top of his deck. His hand consisted of Iakuma Wavebender, Greathawk of Cloudseas, Silver Watchwoman, Stormcaster, and Sylphia. He used Jemial to draw the cards he revealed from Mr. Kins, then discarded a Kins. Wavebender came down, targeting Gloom Oligarch, and Nick allowed that to resolve. After that, Matt passed.
Nick drew for turn, then used Ergon to send Lightning Shot and Golem of Avarice to the discard zone. Nick played Sylphia, calling odd, and Matt responded with Mr. Kins, drawing Chronostasis. Nick returned Sylphia to his hand with Kyte and Sky Dagger, then played Novice Protector before ending the turn.
Matt charged, finding his own Corona, the Spirit Ruby. He went into the tank for a bit, before finally deciding on playing Mr. Kins, revealing Shards of Winter and Silver Watchwoman, and stacking Jemial up to 6 counters. He passed, and Nick used Ergon to put Argent Egg on the top of his deck.
Nick played Gloom Oligarch, then Argent Egg, and passed.
Matt drew, and charged without using any of the 6 shards he had left active last turn. He played Sylphia, calling even. Nick used Gloom Oligarch’s ability to sacrifice the Argent Egg, targeting Sylphia for -1000, and giving himself a Whelp Token. This resolved, and Nick used Oligarch again to sacrifice the Whelp token, giving Sylphia another-1000. Then , Olgiarch sacrificed the Novice Protector, which prompted Matt to respond finally with Kyte, discarding Iakuma Juggernaut, and Oligarch sacrificied itself to finally get the final -1000 to send Sylphia to the discard zone. Matt played Silver Watchwoman, gave her Quickness, and attacked into a Poisonous Strike, discarding Greathawk of Cloudsea.
Golem of Avarice and Delayed Poison hit the discard zone after Nick drew for turn. He played Skytree Hawk, put Gloom Oligarch to the top with Ergon, then discarded Monarch Sky Dagger to return Skytree, and draw 2 cards. Matt used Mr. Kins to draw, before the Gloom Oligarch resolved. Nick then played Argent Egg and passed.
Matt began his turn with Jemial, discarding Monarch Sky Dagger. He played Mr. Kins, revealing two Phantasmal Guards on the top of his deck. He passed, and Nick used Gloom Oligarch to sacrifice Argent Egg, creating a Whelp token, and taking out the Kins.
Nick attacked with the Whelp token, revealing the Dark Tower. Gloom Oligarch came in next, breaking the Water Tower and drawing Matt 2 cards. After that, Nick passed, 6 cards in hand, and 10 shards available.
Matt, with 8 cards in hand, paused and leaned back in his chair, thinking out loud to himself. “If I do this, that happens, then that happens, then I cry…” He eventually decided to play Mr. Kins, revealing Leviathan and Garga from the top. He played Phantasmal Guards, putting two Illusion tokens into play, and returning Jemial to six counters. At the end of Matt’s turn, Nick used Gloom Oligarch to sacrifice his Whelp token, killing the second cat of the game. Nick then used Ergon to stack Argent Egg on top of his deck.
Nick drew, played Argent Egg, and attacked towers, using Gloom Oligarch with the Argent Egg to break through a blocking Illusion token, finding the Air Tower, which cleared both units from his field. He replayed the Gloom Oligarch, and passed.
Matt played Silver Watchwoman, used a counter to give it Quickness, then attacked. Nick used Debilitating Miasma to give -2000 to the Silver Watchwoman and the Illusion token, destroying both. Matt played Phantasmal Guards, getting two Illusion tokens, then followed up with Garga, Keeper of Gales, calling 0. Nick responded with Gloom Oligarch, sacrificing itself to destroy an Illusion token, denying the Garga’s Quickness. Matt discarded Azure Seer to Kyte, returning Garga to his hand, and getting Sky Dagger from his discard. He passed, and Nick used Ergon to return the Gloom Oligarch to his deck.
Nick drew, played Gloom Oligarch, and passed.
Matt played Stormcaster of the Azure Tower, targeting Gloom Oligarch. Nick responded with Gloom Oligarch, targeting the Stormcaster. Matt began picking up his cards, indicating “I think I’m done having fun. Let’s go to game two.”

 

Matt elected to go first for the second game.
His opening hand after mulligans consisted of Azure Seer, Cryptic Deflection, Great Stormfish, and 2 Shards of Winter. He charged a Zephyr Crystal, played Azure Seer, and kept a Stormfish on the top of his deck.
Nick sent Omega Magic: Yami and Novice Protector with Ergon, then played Delayed Poison on the Azure Seer.
Matt’s Azure Seer died to Delayed Poison. He played Stormfish for turn. Nick’s Ergon sent Argent Egg and Sylphia to his discard.
Nick charged his second shard, and ended his turn.
Matt began by attempting to enter battle, but was met by an Omega Magic: Kaze from Nick. He played Great Stormfish, and ended. Nick sent Monarch Sky Dagger and Golem of Allurement to the discard zone with Ergon.
Nick played Hellish Guardhound, targeting Great Stormfish, and ended.
Matt played Phantasmal Guards, creating two Illusion tokens, and stacking Jemial up to 5 counters. He passed with 3 Zephyr Crystal active. Ergon found Debilitating Miasma and Golem of Devourment.
Nick charged his fourth shard, and passed without attacking.
Matt left his shards unused, and began his turn with an attack from Stormfish. Hellish Guardhound blocked, and Stormfish sent the Hound back to Nick’s hand. Great Stormfish attacked next, but was met with Omega Magic: Yami, getting back Golem of Allurement. He targeted an Illusion Token with the Allurement’s arrive, but Ancient Serpent’s Breath returned the token and drew Matt a card. The attack from Great Stormfish went through, finding the Water Tower. Silver Watchwoman hit the field next, and used a counter for Quickness, and attacked into a Light Tower. Nick made his Knight token, then used Ergon to put Sylphia on top of his deck as Matt ended his turn.
Nick drew, then played Sylphia, calling even. The Illusion token disappeared, and Silver Watchwoman was sent packing. Nick used Kyte, the Air Spirit, discarding Golem of Avarice to return Sylphia to his hand. Nick attacked the Great Stormfish with the Knight token, and the Stormfish’s ruined ability took care of the token in kind. Nick ended with 9 cards in hand, and discarded Silver Watchwoman and Skytree Hawk.
Matt started his turn with a Sylphia of his own, calling odd to clear out the Golem of Allurement. He used Kyte to discard Greathawk of Cloudsea, returning Sylphia, then ended his turn. Nick used Ergon to get Argent Egg to the top of his deck.
Nick drew, played Gloom Oligarch, then Argent Egg. He passed, with 1 Zephyr Crystal still active.
Matt charged a Corona, the Spirit Ruby, and with 5 cards in hand, completely passed.
Nick drew for turn, then milled Hellish Guardhound and Delayed Poison with Ergon. He attacked towers with Gloom Oligarch. He found the Fire Tower, which took out the Oligarch. Nick passed, again with all shards active.
Matt played Sylphia, returning the Argent Egg to the bottom of Nick’s deck. He then discarded Cryptic Deflection to Kyte, returning Sylphia to his hand. He passed, and Nick used Ergon to return Gloom Oligarch to the top.
Nick drew, played Gloom Oligarch, and passed.
Matt drew to 6 cards in hand, then played Mei-Yu, Grand Sorceress, targeting the Ancient Serpent’s Breath in his discard zone, and returning it to his hand. He passed with 2 Zephyr Crystal and a Corona, the Spirit Ruby, still active. Nick milled Debilitating Miasma and Greathawk of Cloudsea with Ergon.
Nick played Sylphia, calling even, putting Mei-Yu to the bottom of Matt’s deck. Nick used Kyte, discarding Hellish Guardhound to return Sylphia to his hand, and returned the Sky Dagger from his discard zone to his hand as well. He played Argent Egg, then ended his turn.
Matt started his turn with Jemial, drawing two cards and discarding Cryptic Deflection. He played Phantasmal Guards, creating two Illusion tokens, then ended his turn.
Nick drew, then used Ergon, sending Golem of Allurement and Golem of Devourment. He attacked with Gloom Oligarch, which was temporarily blocked by an Illusion token, before the Argent Egg was offered to the Oligarch to -1000 the blocking token. The Whelp token came out, which was immediately targeted by an Ancient Serpent’s Breath from Nick. He used the token with Oligarch, destroying the other Illusion token, and finally Oligarch found the Dark Tower, costing Nick a Debilitating Miasma. Nick played Silver Watchwoman, gave her Quickness, but was met with a Shards of Winter before battle began. Nick passed.

Matt played Sylphia, calling even, and Nick used Gloom Oligarch to send both units to the discard zone instead of to the bottom. Taking into account the cards he had seen in Nick’s hand, and looking at his own options, Matt decided that this match was extremely unlikely to end in his favor, and conceded with a handshake. Nick Blandin wins 2-0, and advances to Top 4!
